Chemistry is the intriguing study of everything.

This A-Level course starts you on a journey of knowledge, discovery and excitement that may lead you wherever your imagination will take you.

It is a misconception that Chemistry is just for scientists – it goes with any subject as a learning experience and a broad interest. Chemistry gives understanding of the important issues that face your generation. Can you really evaluate climate change, genetic engineering, food and agricultural additives or the safety of a medicine without Chemistry? Would you like to discover something no-one else has ever seen or touched before? With Chemistry all this is possible and much more. 

This knowledge and the analytical skills that you will develop will be an advantage in any career – banking, politics, medicine and law.

How Chemistry
is taught
at Hurtwood

CURRICULUM

At Hurtwood, the AQA A-level Chemistry course is studied. This course is a two year linear course.

Each year of the course is split into three units which cover a wide range of topics relating to the Organic, Inorganic and Physical Fields of Chemistry.  Students regularly undertake practical work, and learn a wide variety of practical techniques as the two years progress.

EXTRA CURRICULAR

The department offers twice-weekly support sessions to help students achieve the best possible results.

There may also be an off-site visit on the A1 and A2 year so that students can see part of the chemical industry in action.  Students are encouraged to read and discuss journals such as Chemistry Review, particularly if they have an interest in reading a scientific subject at university. 

Students are provided with details and support to enter appropriate essay competitions, such as the Cambridge Peterhouse Kelvin essay completion, and the Chemistry Olympiad run by the Royal Society of Chemistry. Sudents are also given information about any externally run revision courses, work experience internships or extension courses that may be of interest.
