HUMANITIES AND LANGUAGE

A RICHER UNDERSTANDING OF HUMANITY

Humanities and Languages cover a broad spectrum. However, they are all dynamic courses that allow students not only to better connect but to better understand the world around them.

Be it the more obvious foreign languages or the more cerebral courses of Sociology and Psychology, students will be totally immersed in the new world that they are going to be introduced to and are sure to leave us with a richer understanding of humanity.

ENGLISH LITERATURE

humanities 1

Here is a subject that can through the magic of words make us happy, make us sad, provoke us to think about deep issues or simply keep us amused or intrigued. It is to be introduced to prose, poetry and drama. Students will be familiarised with many different styles.

For example, the initially demanding tragic treatment of passionate relationships in Brontë’s ‘Jane Eyre’ can open young minds to the attitudes to marriage and social status which prevailed in the nineteenth century. Poetry, that most specialized and refined of literary genres, will be central to the course which features an anthology of poetry by Irish poet W B Yeats, most famous of course for ‘Easter 1916’. William Shakespeare, voted the greatest figure of the Millennium, naturally finds his place in our studies. Assessment by coursework will be a significant feature in each year of the course, with opportunities for close textual study and more extended comparative essays.

HISTORY

TEACHING TAKES PLACE IN SMALL CLASSES OF BETWEEN 10 AND 12 STUDENTS

Debate and discussion are absolutely essential ingredients of good history and students are very much encouraged to take part in these activities.

A feature of the A-level course at Hurtwood House is the way in which students are able to learn about the subject from visiting speakers, by going to subject conferences and by visits to places such as the Imperial War Museum where specialist information is available.

Teaching a subject such as Sociology requires an approach that manages to avoid the pitfalls of woolly thinking and uninformed opinion.

At Hurtwood House the methods used are highly effective, with students working to a structured weekly worksheet and combining this with an active-learning situation in the classroom. This is where the group gain their knowledge of a topic and research it in depth and then discuss it fully.
