Three Hurtwood students were selected to assist the tech team at the 2024 World Gaming Finals at the O2 Arena, one of the biggest and most prestigious gaming events in the world. The 'League of Legends World Finals' attracts millions of viewers, with a grand prize of $2.5 million for the winning team. The opening ceremony, which was completely sold out, was streamed live to 6.9 million viewers worldwide, and directed by the same visionary behind the Super Bowl broadcasts—placing the event at the pinnacle of the television industry.
The students worked as stand-ins during camera technical rehearsals, gaining invaluable hands-on experience at the highest level of live production. They played a crucial role in assisting with camera rehearsals for both the opening ceremony and the World Feed gaming segments. Their work alongside top-tier executives, producers, and crew was a rare opportunity to see the inner workings of a major televised event.
James, an ex-student, served as the Talent Manager for the event, coordinating the team. Student Molly has already been offered work experience at the BBC as a direct result of this opportunity. Reflecting on the experience, Molly stated "Working as a stand-in at the O2 was amazing. Our role was simple but important to the whole production and allowed us to see how the crew worked. As stand ins we coordinated with the camera and lighting team and the floor managers, to help them properly frame and set up shots. It was long hours but was a wonderful insight into the industry of live broadcasting events."
