Congratulations to Jonny and the team behind ‘The Common Room’, the new Hurtwood magazine full of diverse articles on many aspects of Hurtwood life and the wider world. ‘The Common Room’ was created as part of Hurtwood’s Enigma programme where alongside their A Level studies, the students have put together 50 pages of interesting content. During the process they learnt an immense amount about journalism and publishing. The magazine was created in collaboration with MUSE, Hurtwood’s haven for creative writing of all kinds run by Louise and Sam our fabulous English teachers. The Common Room team consisting of Snow, Ruby, Sofia, Sergio, Nikolay, Sophie and Arietta have been busy meeting key players at Hurtwood. Amongst others, they have interviewed Joe, our lead actor in ‘Pippin’, about starring in our celebrated Hurtwood Production, Doug Quinn on being a housemaster at Cornhill and John and Sharon our wonderful kitchen staff, the unsung heroes of Hurtwood. They also interviewed our basketball, netball and hockey captains to review Hurtwood sporting activities.
Certain features look set to become regular highlights of every issue such as ‘Nik’s Flicks’ in which film fanatic Nikolay reviews his film of the year and looks at some up and coming releases. (Nikolay has his sights set on being a film producer and already has an internship lined up for the holidays at a film distribution company.) With articles on music, fashion and an agony aunt to give valuable advice to those in need, there is something for everyone. Without doubt ‘The Common Room’ more than lives up to its strapline ‘For the students, by the students’. There are too many people to thank, but from student photographers to those helping on the technical side with the layout, it has been a wonderful Hurtwood team effort.
