Hurtwood Mind Is Pioneering AI That Makes Students Think

13/10/2026

AI can write an essay in seconds. For parents, the unsettling question is whether their child is still doing the thinking. As AI reshapes the skills young people need and how they acquire them, how can schools prepare students for this future while strengthening their ability to think for themselves?

Hurtwood House is meeting that challenge with Hurtwood Mind, a pioneering educational AI system built to develop both subject understanding and the ability to learn. Available around the clock, it extends the support students receive from their teachers, who remain at the heart of their education.

When AI is used simply to produce finished work, students can bypass the mental effort through which learning happens. Hurtwood Mind is deliberately designed to make students think. It asks what they already understand, challenges them to explain their reasoning and guides them towards answers they can explain for themselves.

The AI draws on evidence-informed teaching principles highlighted by the Education Endowment Foundation. Its guidance uses techniques associated with expert teaching: carefully structured questions, explanations that respond to a student's understanding, and feedback that helps them improve. This scaffolding supports students as they learn to plan their work, recognise gaps in their knowledge and judge their progress.

For students reluctant to put up their hand, uncertainty can remain hidden until a test exposes it. Hurtwood Mind offers a supportive space to ask questions freely and begin addressing difficulties when they arise. One student, nervous about a topic test and unsure where to start, used it to turn their worries into a manageable revision plan. Through alternative explanations and guided practice, their confidence grew and their answers improved.

That experience illustrates something powerful: the confidence to admit “I don't understand” can become the confidence to have a go. Students can revisit explanations at their own pace, practise their thinking and approach the next challenge with a clearer sense of how to begin.

Learning to work intelligently with AI is also preparation for life beyond school. Hurtwood Mind encourages students to question suggestions, evaluate information and take ownership of their work. Combining their curiosity, creativity and judgement with AI's capabilities opens possibilities for exploring ideas and tackling increasingly ambitious challenges.

Hurtwood's first virtual tutor already draws on material covered in lessons, connecting independent study with familiar classroom teaching. Plans include further virtual tutors, dedicated revision planners, flashcard makers and writing feedback partners, each designed around a specific learning task.

Hurtwood Mind is the foundation for a bold vision: learning support that grows with each student, strengthens their independence and helps them achieve more. By developing these tools around the expertise of its teachers, Hurtwood is taking a pioneering role in educational AI, with the ambition to set a benchmark for schools across the country. The goal is for students to leave Hurtwood ready to shape the future, confident in their own abilities and equipped to work creatively and critically with AI.
