TEACHER OF MATHEMATICS

We are looking for a dynamic A Level and GCSE teacher to join a well-established and well-resourced Mathematics department for September 2026.

The teaching team consists of five experienced members of staff, many of whom are fluent in all branches of the subject. We offer A Level courses in both Mathematics and Further Mathematics; our Further Mathematics programme of study includes the Mechanics and Decision Maths options. This is a full time role, teaching three groups of A level students or two groups of A level students and a GCSE retake group. Contact time with each class is six hours per week - a lesson per day - and there is time allocated each week for department clinics and tutorials. The department offers a collaborative approach in which schemes of work, lesson plans and resources are widely shared. The school is generous with its funding of professional development for teachers who are looking to develop their A Level teaching skills further. The department enjoys the full backing of the school in pursuing outside events such as the UK and US Maths Challenges, with a number of students qualifying for follow-on rounds each year. The ability to offer MAT and STEP Mathematics would be an advantage.

Hurtwood House is one of England’s most exciting and successful schools, specialising exclusively in the Sixth Form. We have an impressive academic record, a reputation for preparing students successfully for higher education and are renowned for the quality of our pastoral care. A culture of high expectations, creativity and professionalism permeates the school and we encourage students and staff to work in partnership to achieve the academic and personal outcomes that are important to us.

Hurtwood House has its own generous salary scale and benefits – our staff are welcome to join students in the first class dining facilities for three meals a day and there is a staff wellbeing programme, comprising in-school sessions and membership of the local leisure centre and its facilities. Many of our teachers develop their experience and range of skills by becoming involved in managing boarding house life for an additional allowance once they have worked at Hurtwood for a year or two. There is an Employee Assistance Programme in place for all staff and we are a member of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.

This role would particularly suit teachers who are looking to take the next step in their careers, who want to specialise in Sixth Form teaching and who value a collaborative approach to teaching and learning.

Closing Date: Friday 13 February 2026
(Interviews will take place in the week beginning 2 March 2026)
