The potential artist, linguist, scientist, philosopher, lawyer, actor or captain of industry – each is well catered for and valued. We prepare our students in 22 A-level subjects which can be studied in any combination, and the curriculum includes traditional academic studies as well as more contemporary subjects.

The school understands that the 21st century is rapidly changing and that now, more than ever, the demands of industry are driving fresh requirements for qualifications. So while subjects like Maths, History, Economics, English, Modern Languages and Science still form the backbone to a well-balanced academic portfolio (a quarter of the school is studying A-level Maths), the trend towards ‘real life’ disciplines such as Accountancy, Law, Business and Media Studies is also acknowledged and is well provided for. hg

The course fits the student

Every course of study is ‘tailor made’ which enables Hurtwood students to select a programme which reflects their personal strengths and passions and puts them on the first step of the journey towards the realisation of their aspirations and dreams.

Certainly, Hurtwood students achieve results at the end of the day that allow them to realise their ambitions. Examination success is a crucial part of this journey and Hurtwood has an enviable record of achieving grades that consistently place the school high up in the league tables in a position described by the Financial Times as ‘among the cream of the country’s best schools, indeed, on average ober the last five years Hurtwood has been the top co-educational boarding schools in the country according to the Daily Telegraph league tables’.

The Teachers

Hurtwood has the sort of teachers you always wished you’d had when you were younger. They are A-level specialists teaching exclusively at sixth-form level. They are great communicators, are passionate about their chosen subject and, most importantly of all, know how to inspire their students. They are also a vital part of a team that ensures students achieve their full potential, often far in excess of their own expectations.

You always know where you are

As well as being an inspirational environment, Hurtwood is also exceptionally supportive. Contrary to the style of many other schools, Hurtwood does not believe that all students of sixth-form age are naturally equipped to manage their academic career by themselves.

No other school in England assesses its students in such detail every week. Our unique system for monitoring academic progress is probably the single most important reason why our students do so well. It is effective on many fronts, keeping students on target and providing everyone involved – students, staff, school management and parents – with a permanently up-to-date picture of progress. It also enables Housemasters and personal tutors to help their students on the really important issues and in doing so to develop a strong working relationship.

In both an academic and a pastoral sense Hurtwood teachers act much more as mentors than monitors and are there as needed to give counsel and a real-world perspective.
