Cambridge Debating

Louise Campbell and April Robinson chose to defend the dramatist Tennessee Williams in the University of Surrey’s Balloon Debate, against Wilfrid Owen, William Golding, Brian Friel and William Shakespeare. With the only unscripted presentation they really shook up the competition and surprised the judges. This was good preparation for their later participation in the Cambridge Union Schools Debating Competition, held at The City of London Freemen’s School, making a fist of arguing in favour of performance related pay for teachers in one debate and against compulsory vaccinations for the under-fives in the second. Sadly the failure to show up by one of the Cambridge judges meant that the evening ended in disappointment. It was good practice, though, for next term’s Oxford Union competition when Louise and April will be joined by Ebiye Alaibe and Catalina Blackman.

I don't really know where to begin when trying to thank you for the last two years - which has just been the best time of my life so far. I have taken more than anything I thought I could at Hurtwood, with all its INCREDIBLE opportunities. I will miss this amazing school so much - which is more like a home to me
