THE MUSICAL

This is not just any school play. Our aim here is to take you on a journey which ends up as near to a full on professional West End experience (as possible)  It is something of an,  occasion, running for 12 performances  and attracting a large regular following which includes agents and casting directors from the business. This is a huge event involving up to one third of the school and a whopping big budget. Last year we spent £50,000 ensuring very high, production values. This is because we use West End designers, sound engineers and musicians. We see this as something you will want to remember for the rest of your life! This is the Real Thing!

Rehearsals are tough and exacting - make no mistake, you don’t reach our standards without total commitment and a lot of hard work. Whether in the lead or the chorus everyone has a stake in seeking  That perfect show. The sense of teamwork  makes all the effort very  worthwhile, especially if you want to fast track yourself into the centre of the buzz – the mainstream of school life - forge confidence and  make friends from the outset of term.

Whether it is a musical theatre classic, like “West Side Story” or “Jesus Christ Superstar”, or a popular compilation show like “Copacabana” or “We Will Rock You”, or one of our own devised adaptations like “Cy Rano” – every show we present has a generous sprinkling of Hurtwood creative magic which brings an originality and excitement to the work.

This year we have chosen “Back to the 80’s! – the totally awesome musical!”In the spirit of the films “Back to the Future”, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” this piece takes a wry look at High School life and graduation, a generation on from “Grease”. Set to the hit tunes of the 80’s, the story takes us forth to meet the varied students and staff of William Ocean High School and their passions, pains and progress as they prepare to leave school.

Through the year we run a Musical Theatre course in the Enigma programme of extension activities. Initially this introduces students to the different ways song, dance and acting skills combine, but as the year goes on it focuses on generating material for and rehearsal of the end of year Showcase. A fun way to end one year and to start the next by presenting it again at Freshers’.
