Straight Drama

Almost half the school take A Level Theatre Studies which means there is an ongoing development of student theatre practitioners – actors, designers, directors – who build up an appreciation of the craft of theatre and how it works as an art form.  Each year offers practical work which is presented to a discerning school audience. The department team of ten are drawn from a wide range of theatrical disciplines and backgrounds and our team teaching approach means that you are exposed to a wide range of experiences to stretch you.

Technical support is provided by staff recruited from regional theatres who help us achieve professional standards of sound, lighting and stage management. Some students develop a skill in this area and have gone on to design or technical courses at RADA, Central and Mountview.

Encouragement of student writing and direction is given and where possible this is showcased informally. Our Festival of Theatre in March brings the examination work together in a programme to rival the National Theatre! See COMING SOON for further details.

SOPH

Serious Dramas (and that’s just off-stage - as we put on sixteen shows in two weeks!)

Comedy, classics and the outright experimental will reach out to slake the thirst of even the most fervent theatre addict.

You get a chance to act, direct, design or take on all three if you are fool enough.  Once again you will be guided by our top teaching staff with professional actors and directors.

We always need a hand to work the lights, the sound and backstage. Not that we see you as giving a hand in this department you will be among the respected elite, for without you there is no show. Many of our more technically able students have gone on to Study at the major school including RADA and Bristol Old Vic.        mcB car
